The Flyers will be playing approx. 50 games this season, so the first few are a small part of the complete puzzle, but with four wins under their belt in four outings, the Ice Station Valencia based team is off to the best start of their six year history.
The season began at home on Sept. 15th with a 9-0 drubbing of the Bay City Bombers. Rookie goaltender Taylor Nelson made his debut and earned the shut-out as the Flyers came to play in their home opener. Brian Voogt netted four goals to lead all scorers in the effort.
The following weekend, the always tough Capital Thunder came to town to take on the Flyers at Ice Station Valencia. Coach Marvin once again had the boys ready to play as they swept the Thunder in convincing fashion. Once again Taylor Nelson stood in nets for the first of three and once again he pitched a shut-out as the young Flyers team posted a 6-0 victory. Andrew Monesi lead the way with a pair of goals while Voogt, Young, Kendryna and Torossian socred one apiece.
The second game Vs the Thunder was much tougher as Nelson and the Flyers notched their third victory of the season 5-3. The defense has been solid keeping the shots to a minimum and the scoring has been very balanced on goals from Tyson Cox, Anthony Kendryna, Evan Beuchler, Tony Torossian and Brian Voogt.
In the finally, the Flyers scored in the first minute of the game on Tony Torossian’s third goal of the season. It stayed that way until late in the first on a Thunder short handed goal. It remained one to one until late in the second when Joe Reddick lit the lamp with what eventually proved to be the game winner. Brian Voogt (who has recorded a goal in every game so far), finished off the scoring in the third on a break-away goal. Rookie netminder Jackson Winkler played the entire game and played well notching his first Junior A win.
The Flyers are off to Phoenix this weekend for three games against the Polar Bears who are also without a loss. This will be their best test yet for sure.
