only game this weekend will be on Sunday when they play host to the Capital
Thunder.

The last
time these two teams met for a weekend series the Thunder took two of the three
games. Those games not only marked the first weekend series loss to the Thunder,
but also the first loss of any kind to the team from Sacramento on the season.

There is no
doubt that the Flyers are looking to erase those losses and keep a big
advantage in the season series against the Thunder, which is already at 7-2 in
favor of the Flyers. "This Sunday is a big game for us," stated assistant
captain Christian Starr. "We gave them some confidence last time we met that
they shouldn't have against us. We feel we are the better team and as long as
we take care of our chances and limit our mistakes we should get our two
points."

The Flyers
are also looking to remain close behind Phoenix
in second place. And every game matters as the Flyers have a light schedule
leading into the holiday break with only 6 games left in December, counting
this Sunday's game. "We are only 3
points out of first right now," acknowledged Flyers' head coach Chris Hartly.
"With only a handful of points up for grabs between now and January we need to
take as many as possible so we can head into the last part of the season poised
to jump back into first."

The puck
drops Sunday at 10:20am at Ice Station.

Thanksgiving Day Wrap Up

It has been a while since an update on how the team has been doing; therefore this one will be a bit long so everyone can get caught up.

After starting the season 5 -0 the Flyers were headed to Phoenix to face the Polar Bears and their biggest test to that point of the season, facing Phoenix on the road for a three game set. The Flyers were able to open up the road trip with a win and extend their winning streak to 6 games beating the Polar Bears 5-2. Unfortunately, the streak ended there as the Polar Bears handed the Flyers their first loss of the season in a close 3-2 game the next day. The Flyers bounced back with another convincing 5-2 win on Sunday to take the three game set 2-1. The hot hands for the Flyers on this weekend belonged to the members of the potent scoring line of: team captain Andrew Monesi (9 points on the weekend), Saugus native Brian Voogt and rookie forward Daniel Chang (each with 5 points on the weekend).

Next the Flyers would head into a four game weekend during the WSHL Western Division Showcase. All five teams in the division met in the greater LA area and all played four games over three days. The first game for the Flyers was against San Diego. And during their first meeting of the season the Gulls prevailed in a hard fought 4-2 game. On day two of the showcase the Flyers got their revenge on the Gulls beating them 5-1 before remaining undefeated against the So Cal Bombers in a 4-0 win. The win marked both the first shutout of the season for the flyers and the first career shutout for rookie goaltender Andrew Lux. The Flyers faced San Diego in the last game of the showcase in a match that would keep everyone on the edge of their seat. Both teams had chances to put the game away as the lead changed hands four times on a way to a 9-8 overtime win for the Gulls. With that OTL (overtime loss) the Flyers would walk away from the showcase with a 9-2-1 overall record (again with the 1 being an OTL and not a tie) and a solid hold on first place in the Western Division. And the big standouts for the Flyers over the four game showcase were defenseman Tyler Gilmore (7 points) and goaltenders Andrew Lux and Noble Tucker (each getting a win and having a .95 save percentage or higher on the weekend).

The Flyer s' next action came via a home and away weekend series with the Bombers. The first game, which was at Ice Station Valencia, was an easy 10-2 victory for the Flyers in which seven of the Flyers would tally goals. In game two of the weekend series the Flyers would come away winners again in a nail-biting 4-3 shootout win. The big guns for the Flyers over the two games were Brian Voogt (6pts), Daniel Chang (5pts), Valencia native Anthony Kendryna (4 pts) and former NAHL defenseman Nic Calma (3pts). With defenseman Alex Brodetsky's game winning shootout goal in game two, the Flyers remained at the top of the Western Division and the entire WSHL with a 10-2-1 record.

The next challenge the Flyers would have to answer to was another three game weekend on the road. This time the Flyers headed north to Sacramento to face the Capital Thunder. As the Flyers' offense was clicking well all weekend their defense was nothing to write home about. However, the Flyers still managed to add three more wins to their record and remain perfect against the Thunder with two 7-5 victories and a 2-1 win to cap off the weekend. The heroes for the Flyers on the scoresheet over the three games were Anthony Kendryna (7pts), Brian Voogt (6pts), Flyers veteran Christian Starr (6pts), Daniel Chang (5pts), and rookie forward Casey Howard (4pts). And Jackson Winkler, another Santa Clarita Valley native, collected all three wins for the Flyers between the pipes.

Still in first place the Flyers returned home to face-off with Phoenix in another three game weekend. The first two games both went the Polar Bears' way as the Flyers turned in two lack luster performances and lost 5-2 and 5-0. On Sunday the Flyers finally showed how they can play and evened out the season series three games a piece with another 5-2 win over the Polar Bears. Christian Starr led the way over the weekend with three points while Gilmore, Monesi, Chang, and Howard all had 2 points.

The following weekend the road called again as the Flyers headed to San Diego for their first road game against the Gulls. As the game entered the third period it looked like the Flyers were on the way to an easy win being up 5-2 but the Gulls came back hard and pushed it right up until the final buzzer barely letting the Flyers squeak out a 5-4 win. The next morning the Flyers were off to Lakewood to face the Bombers in their sixth meeting of the season. Having prevailed in the previous five meetings the Flyers might have been under-respecting the Bombers as they fell short and lost 2-1. The leading scorers for the weekend were Chang (3pts), Monesi (2pts) and Voogt (2pts) while Winkler received the win in the San Diego game.

With a league leading record of 16-5-1 the Flyers headed back down the I-5 to square off with the Gulls again. In their only game on the weekend the Flyers came out flat and quickly went down 2-0 during the first period. They started to regroup in the second period and after getting some offense going went into the third period tied with San Diego at three. The third period was all Flyers as they outscored the Gulls 4-1 in the final frame to win the game 7-4. Rookie Defenseman Chris Victoria (Wildomar, CA) tallied the most points on the night, netting one goal and two assists, while defenseman Steffan Buck (Fresno, CA) and Mickey Allison (Seattle, WA) each had two points in the winning effort.

This finally brings us to last weekend when the Flyers returned to Sacramento for their final road trip north for the regular season. As the Flyers battled hard all three games it was a difference of a few bounces and some goaltending that kept the Flyers from winning all three games and remaining undefeated against the Thunder. The first two games of the weekend the Flyers outshot the Thunder a combined 126-43 but ended up losing both games 6-2. In the third and final match-up of the weekend the Flyers outshot the thunder again, this time the shots were 79-64 and the Flyers won 6-2. Offensive standouts on the weekend were Monesi (5pts), Voogt (3pts), Calma (2pts), Brodetsky (2pts) and newly added forward Brandon Butler (2pts). And besides getting another win in net, Winkler also managed to tally an assist.

With the final scores in around the league going into the Thanksgiving break, the Flyers now sit in second place with a record of 18-7-1; trailing the Phoenix Polar Bears by only three points.

The next Flyers game is Sunday December 7th at 10:20am at Ice Station Valencia. They will be taking on the Capital Thunder, and
after dropping two recent games to them look for the Flyers to come out hard as
they try to settle the score.

Valencia Flyers go 5 - 0 to start season

After getting out the brooms for the Cap Thunder series to start out 3 -0 on the 2008/2009 WSHL season, the Flyers traveled down to Long Beach for a two game set with the Bombers.

“It’s a tough building to go into and win” said Flyers GM Larry Bruyere “We have always struggled to play consistently here and we’re pleased with this weekend’s results.” He went on to say. What he was referring to, was a two game sweep of the Bombers that has basically put the Flyers at the top of the pack early on in the Western States Hockey League this season.

Both games were very competitive as the Bombers were on top early 2 – 0 in the opener and the Flyers battled back to take that contest 5 -3. The Bombers went up early 2 – 0 with two outnumbered attack goals and were ahead 3 – 2 going into the third when Christian Starr, Daniel Chang and Tyler Gilmore each scored in the third to afford Valencia the victory.

The second game Vs The Bombers was just as tough as the Flyers battled to a 4 – 3 victory on goals from Monesi, Voogt, Chang and Allsion. Jackson Winkler was between the pipes for his first “W” of the year and he had many opportunities to show his athleticism as the Bombers were able to get more than 30 shots on goal and many of those shots were from point blank range.

The Flyers travel over to Phoenix for three games next week and will certainly be challenged there.

They didn’t finish as strong and they knew that the 2008/2009 version would have to not only start out hot, but finish hot as well if they were going to be successful in the play-offs.

Well, they got the start they wanted with a three game sweep of the same Capital Thunder team they swept a year ago and while they gave up 11 goals in the three games, they scores 19 goals in the process.

The line of Chang, Monesi and Voogt led the way in scoring by tallying 10 of the 19 goals scored over the weekend. Anthony Kendryna notched 4 of his own goals for the Flyers as his line was also very effective.

Goaltender Noble Tucker earned the “W” in nets for all three games as he started the first and third games and he came in while the Flyers were behind in the second game only to see his team rally from two goals down for the victory. “It was a team effort all weekend” said coach Hartly as he reflected on the trifecta. “Everyone in that locker room wants to win and it’s reflected in their play.”

The Flyers head to Lakewood for two against the Bombers this Fri and Sat (9/26 and 9/27) and are hoping to keep the streak alive against Long Beach who are 1 and 1 thus far on the season.

Daniel Chang was the local hero as he notched 4 goals and his line accounted for a total of 13 points as his linemates Andy Monesi and Brian Voogt added goals of their own. Noble Tucker was solid between the pipes as the Thunder wouldn’t go away all night. They took 43 shots on the Flyers netminder and as coach Hartly stated after the game. “This team is going to have to get a whole lot better defensively if we’re going to be successful this year”.

“Fourteen goals means a lot of good and bad things happened out there tonight,” said Coach Hartly, “but obviously we’re pleased with the results.”

Flyers Announce Roster for 2008/2009 Season

The Valencia Flyers new coach Chris Hartly has made his final selections for roster spots for this year’s Flyers team. “While it is still a fluid situation as players and positions are still being manipulated, we like what we’ve seen so far” said coach Hartly.

The Flyers' 2008 main camp concluded on Sunday August 17th, with a full 60 minute scrimmage between the 38 prospective players in attendance. After battling it out for one of the twenty-five roster spots at the last skate, players made their way through exit interviews with the coaching staff to find out if they had made this year's roster. Afterwards the Flyers' staff and newly selected players were excited with what camp had delivered.

"Camp went extremely well," exclaimed Flyers' Head Coach Chris Hartly. "We had a good idea of what to expect from camp, but what we actually ended up with out of camp really surpassed our expectations."

The Flyers will now have about four weeks of practice and exhibition games leading into their season-opening home series against the Capital City Thunder September 19-21 at Ice Station Valencia. And although there are still a lot of unknowns before the season actually starts, it seems that everyone around the team is excited about the potential for this year's team.

"I am really looking forward to working with my new team," stated new rookie forward Daniel Chang. "I am very excited for that first game and to see what we can do on the ice together. It's hard to wait that long, but we look pretty strong and I think that having that extra time to prepare for the season and to start bonding together will make it go by fast."

The Flyers will start practicing this week and will continue to have 3-4 ice workouts per week until the season opener.
It was two weeks until Main Camp and Coach Hartly already had several Flyer prospects on the ice working hard. They were skating alongside NHL All Stars Mathieu Schneider, Ryan Getzlaf, Dustin Pennar and Sheldon Souray while working with 40 young future stars at the Pro Performance Hockey Academy.

“It was a week of hockey fun and accomplishment” said coach Hartly. “Working with pros like Mathieu Schneider was a real treat for the kids and for our Flyers players who came out to help”. The Camp ran from August 4-8 at the Flyers home rink Ice Station and from all accounts, it was a great week for everyone involved.

Hartly, who previously coached the Eugene Generals for three years and amassed a record of 59-33, is excited to get started and arrived in Valencia just in time to evaluate the players attending the Flyers Prospect Camp.

Ryan Marvin, who recently stepped down as Flyers Head Coach for an opportunity to return to school to obtain his Masters Degree while coaching at Bemidji State, has left coach Hartly with a solid stable of returning players and a team on the right track heading into the 2008/2009 campaign.

Hartly played his junior hockey in the BCHL before attending Wentworth Institute of Technology where he made the “Team All-American Rookie Team in 2001 and played as a defenseman for four years.

“We wish coach Marvin well as he pursues his dreams at Bemidji State. It’s a great opportunity for him.” Said General Manager Larry Bruyere. “We are very happy for Ryan as he has certainly left his mark on our program during his short tenure here.” “We are also looking forward to assembling our squad under coach Hartly as we get ready to invite players to our main camp in August".

Head Coach Steps Down

The Valencia Flyers 2007-08 Head Coach has been tabbed as the Graduate Assistant men’s hockey coach at Bemidji State University of the CHA.
